Every year the Department of Agriculture conducts two food and health safety inspections. This year our Moscow Elementary Center food service department received perfect scores for both inspections. It is our goal to offer the best service in a healthy and safe environment as possible. Congratulations to our food service staff, maintenance department, and North Pocono School District for achieving this goal. |

Mr. Akens began his career in the North Pocono area as a physical education and math teacher in January 1946 at Moscow High School. He later became basketball coach and in 1958 was appointed to principal of that school. He held that position until 1963 when he became the first principal of North Pocono High School, a newly formed jointure. Because of his competitiveness and enthusiasm to achieve excellence in sports and education, he remains one of the most influential people in the history of the North Pocono community. This is the first year since 1968 that the boy’s basketball Christmas Tournament is not being held. Several circumstances would not allow for that to happen. The tournament is expected to return next year; however, it may be in a different format.
In order to honor the memory of Mr. Akens, the district has set aside January 30, 2010, the boys basketball game with Scranton High School, to have a brief ceremony and to sponsor basketball player’s Alumni Night. We hope many of the alumni will join us for the evening, and that some will participate in an alumni game before the junior varsity contest. We are attempting to reach as many former North Pocono basketball players, male and female, to participate in this event. If you are alumni of the basketball program, or if you know anyone who is, and would like to be a part of this evening, please contact the high school main office at 842-7606 so that we may provide additional information. |

Mrs. Cheri Carpenter is introducing cooking into her classroom and has named it Kinders Can Cook Project. Each Monday a letter is introduced and on Friday the letter is celebrated with a cooking activity beginning with that letter. The children take turns with the responsibility of being the chef on Fun Food Friday. They prepare and serve the food to the rest of the class. The menu has included homemade ice cream, cherry crisp, crock pot hot dogs, and friendship fruit salad. The children are excited when it is their turn to wear the chef hats and aprons, and work with Chef Combo, the puppet mascot.
Mrs. Carpenter’s research has shown that cooking with children is a fun way to promote higher level thinking and foster independence. What better way to develop these skills than through cooking? |
