NPMS Drama Club: Night at the Theater
Thursday, 04 March 2010

This year, the North Pocono Middle School Drama Club, under the direction of Mrs. Rosemarie Warner and Mrs. Jennifer Grudeski, has chosen a comedy that is a treasure trove of outlandish adventure “fer all of ya land-dwellers!” With a clan of misfit pirates, seafaring castaways, and two bumbling natives, Pirate Island by Martin Follose marks the middle school’s first production to be presented in the full-sized auditorium of the former high school.

Captain Peach (portrayed by Zachary Silvia) and his band of money-grubbin’ pirates(Caroline Mowry, Justin Guse, Kristin Saylor, Danielle Freuhan, Mackenzee Merritt, and Amanda Sember) have been roaming the island for years searching for a treasure chest filled with diamonds, pearls, and gold that Blue Beard buried on this very island before he tripped and fell overboard. Captain Peach even holds Blue Beard’s map that pin-points the treasure. But the gold-loving clan is growing restless, and mutiny is close at hand.

Meanwhile, on another part of the island, Barbara (played by MaryAnn Cuccherini) and her fellow castaways(Ashley Berlot, Kelly Kozlowski, Sarah Rowe, Sarah Rable, Nathan Basila, and Victoria Dombek) are stranded in the middle of who-knows-where with very little in the way of survival supplies . . . and Barbara’s beat-up, timeworn trunk. If that’s not enough to anchor their hopes, Mrs. Houston warns them about snakes, headhunters, and quite possibly scurvy pirates inhabiting the island (that’s how she lost Mr. Houston!). Their only hope is to be saved by Barbara’s father (Jon Fisher), a sea-faring captain who might have gone down with his ship.

To further agitate these two groups, the island is home to two, not-so-bright natives. The natives (Gavin Anderson and Cole Gay) offer slapstick comedy along with other shenanigans. This play is one for the entire family. Kids of all ages love pirates and adventure which is found a-plenty in this light-hearted tale of finding one’s place in the world.

Middle School Drama Club seventh and eighth grade members are involved in all aspects of the production, including lighting, make-up, sound, props, and costumes. This year’s student stage managers, Wesley Fenstermaker and Jake Guerra, lead the student cast and crew in learning theatre from all viewpoints. The result is a production filled with dedication and pride. Performances for 6th, 7th, and 8th grades will take place during the school day on March 10th and 11th. The play will be performed for the public on Thursday, March 11th at 7:00 P.M in the middle school auditorium.

Seuss 047

The Cat in the Hat visits with two Dr. Seuss fans.

Students at the Moscow Elementary Center participated in the “Read Across America Day”. Illustrious guest readers did a splendid job of reading a plethora of books to entice and encourage children to become successful readers. Participating were Dr. Kurt Eisele, Mr. Robert Barrett, Mr. Dan Powell, Mr. Jeff Hatala, Mr. Chip DeWolfe, Mrs. Barbara Karnafel, Mrs. Ellen Lentowski, Mrs. Karen Mattern, Ms. Carol Natitus, Ms. Maripat O’Donnell, Mr. Pete Carlson, Officer Brian Layland, and members of the Minisink Lions Club. In addition, the Cat in the Hat visited the classroom to give treats to the children. Classes sang “Happy Birthday” to Dr. Seuss, and celebrated reading in a very special way with the help of some very special readers. A marvelous time it was!
