Moscow Elementary Receives Grant Print E-mail
Monday, 04 December 2017

The Moscow Elementary Center was recently awarded a 1,000.00 grant to promote our students understanding of the rich heritage of our local area and how the Lackawanna river watershed contributed to our industry. Students will develop an appreciation for the outdoor environment and all the trails and outdoor activities that our area has to offer.

One hundred and thirty-six third grade students and their parents will enjoy the day at Covington Lake, learning about the history of the tributaries of the Lackawanna River in the local area and what they meant to industry and pioneer living. Historians will present on the Roaring Brook tributary and the industry it provided to the settlers in this area in 1818 when Covington was founded.

Mr. Gaughan will present some of the newly formed trails and clearings at the Roaring Brook landing to families as an option for outdoor family experiences. Jim Cullen and Jack Bordo will play folk music at the site. Students will create scenes on river rock that relate to the environment. The river rock will be painted and sealed and brought back to the school for a landscaped focal point of river rock that will exemplify contributions of unity and environmental awareness in the community.

Following the day of fun there will be a weekend get together to work on building the landscaped river that will embellish the grounds of the Moscow Elementary Center. The community will be welcome to partake in adding painted rocks to our river. Coming up in May of 2018…Stay tuned for more information on the progress of the grant…

Miss Smith's first grade class teamed up with Mrs. Farr's 7th grade students to explore and learn about a variety of science concepts and experiments. Students learned about density of different liquids, chemical reactions, and "Non-Newtonian" liquids to just name a few. Seventh grade students taught our first grade friends all about the hard work and research they have been doing in class, in return first grade students taught the water cycle through presentation, song, experiment and craft. Students enjoyed working together and meeting new friends.
