Author/Illustrator Lindsay Barrett-George demonstrates to MEC students, how writings and illustrations become a book.
The Kindergarten and First Grade students of MEC had a rare opportunity to meet the very talented author/illustrator Lindsay Barrett-George. Retired reading specialist Martha Andreychik, with the help of faculty from the old Academy Street School, invited Lindsay to talk to the children about where she gets her ideas for her wonderful children's books. Lindsay demonstrated how she draws some of her favorite animals, and she described the process of how her writings and illustrations become a book. The children had a chance to ask questions and create their own illustrations. Ms. Barrett-George presented each student with a poster featuring two of her favorite characters, Inside Mouse and Outside Mouse. The children left the program with such enthusiasm, and some with aspirations of becoming an author or illustrator themselves someday. We would like to thank Lindsay Barrett George for her visit. You can visit Lindsay's website, lindsaybarrettgeorge.com to learn about her other books or visit the library and borrow one for some summer reading. |

Moscow Elementary Center's second and third grade “yellow pod” students partnered up to experience embryology in the classroom. The eggs were delivered on April 12th by Ruth Burns from the 4-H School Enrichment project of Lackawanna County. The eggs were placed in classroom incubators and kept at a constant temperature of 99.9 degrees fahrenheit. The children learned that eggs need to be turned to insure proper growth. Teachers candled the eggs by shining light through them to show the development of the embryo. The children were able to observe the blood vessels, the air sac and chick movement. The children were very excited observing the actual hatching of the chicks. This was a rewarding experience for both students and teachers.

Second graders in northeastern Pennsylvania had guest readers from the Chambers of Commerce from Lackawanna, Luzerne, Wayne, and Wyoming Counties. The program originated with Skills in Scranton and the Northeastern Pennsylvania Reading Association that combined their efforts to bring the business world into the classroom. Fourteen years later, the program is still growing and thriving.
After the volunteers read the selected books, they are given to the children to be part of their classroom library. The books are donated through the generosity of Boyds Mills Press and Bank of America.

The second grade classes of Mrs. Goul, Mrs. Romanski, Mrs. Bowen, and Mrs. Taynton recently completed the 4-H Embryology project. The children learned all about the life cycle of chickens in conjunction with the science curriculum.
The students were very excited to see the chicks hatch and grow in their own classrooms. Now that the chicks have gone to a farm, the children will all remember this wonderful experience. |

First grade students from Moscow Elementary Center had the opportunity to meet Ms. Kelly Pulice from the North Pocono Public Library. Ms. Pulice spoke to all the first grade classes about all the wonderful resources, programs and books our local library has to offer. She encouraged the children to visit the library and take advantage of all the wonderful events they put on for our community. The students were also given a library card application, and those who had their parents permission, will be receiving their cards in the mail sometime in April. Ms. Pulice read two of her favorite library books and gave each student a bookmark. Information on the North Pocono Public Library's Summer Reading Program will go home with all of our students here at MEC sometime in May. Students are encouraged to participate in this reading program during the summer months.
