From the Desk of Mr. Hatala …

Dear MEC Families,

Another summer has gone by and we have spent most of the days preparing for another exciting school year.  All of our teachers are eager for the arrival of both new and returning students.   We hope everyone enjoyed their summer break and is now renewed and full of energy to begin a new school year.

With the new school year come new challenges and opportunities.  Students are anxious to make and meet new friends and are excited about seeing old friends again.  The Moscow Elementary Center (MEC) is prepared to provide every child with the opportunity to learn and to successfully attain their highest aspirations that both parents and
teachers set for them.  To help achieve these goals, we are pleased to welcome back a vibrant and exciting teaching staff.

Updates/Need to Know:  Student enrollment - In grades kindergarten through grade 3, we presently have 565 students and 48 professional staff members readily available to serve your children.

Playground - I am pleased to announce that our new playground has arrived! Installation should be completed by the end of this week.  Thank you again to all those family and friends who contributed to our playground campaign.

Pennsylvania Common Core - The North Pocono School District along with MEC will continue to implement a more rigorous curriculum that is in compliance with our state mandates.  PA Core standards offer a set of academic expectations in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics that all students should master by the end of each grade level.

Everyday Math - During the 2014-2015 school year, kindergarten and grade 1 adopted a more challenging math series, Everyday Math, that is aligned to the PA Common Core Standards.  In the 2015-2016 school year, grades 2 through 5 adopted the same program, thus challenging your child to think more critically and problem solve in a variety of
mathematical ways.

Wonders - Wonders, published by McGraw-Hill, is a newly adopted reading series that will be implemented Kindergarten through 5th grade this school year.  This new series, designed to address the ELA needs of all readers at any level, will allow our students to be exposed to curriculum aligned with Common Core.

Title I Reading - For any qualifying student in grades 1-3 who needs extra support or lacks fundamental literacy skills, MEC offers Title I Reading services.  Please contact your child’s teacher if you feel your child may need extra reading support.

Olweus Bully Prevention Program - Bullying will not be tolerated at MEC.  In efforts to abolish bullying, all students will be introduced to our newly adopted Olweus Bullying Prevention Program.  Bullying prevention will now be incorporated into our teachers’ lesson planning on a daily basis. Students will have multiple opportunities to learn
how to prevent and report bullying.

In closing, our goal at MEC is to provide your sons and daughters with a structured and challenging curriculum.  With the educational leadership from our administration and the guidance of our teachers, MEC will proudly assist in the educational development of your child.

Sincerely,
Mr. Jeff Hatala
Principal
