As the school year races towards the end, this time of year is filled with many activities to assist students adjust to the various transitions they will be experiencing. In guidance, special attention is given to 8th graders as they prepare for next year’s move to the High School. We also work with the Intermediate School counselor to learn about the in-coming 6th graders so we can assure their transition to the Middle School is a smooth one. Meetings are held with each Middle School team to discuss student progress and any issues that may need to be addressed.
Several field trips are also planned for students in May. Eighth grade students will travel to the Lackawanna Career Technical Center where they will tour the school and learn about the various programs that CTC offers. Although interested students will not be able to attend CTC until their sophomore year of high school, we feel introducing students to what is available to them in the future is an important aspect of career development. The 8th grade students will also travel to the High School, where they will tour the building and meet some of the teachers. Fifth grade students will travel across the parking lot to tour the Middle School. We are hoping to alleviate some of the natural fear and trepidation that occurs with change.
There is a new program that will take place in our community during the summer.
U-Aut-2-Act! Is a special theater arts program specifically designed for children with autism. This week-long program has two sessions, the morning designed for students ages 8 – 11 and the afternoon for students 12 – 15. For more information call 878-3397 or e-mail

May/June Highlights:
- May 9 – Career Technology Center tour for 8th graders
- May 14 – 5th graders tour NPMS
- May 18 – 8th graders tour NPHS
- May 31 – last full day for students
- June 8 – last day of school
Guidance Tip:
May is both Mental Health Month and National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. We acknowledge both observances because they are so closely related for young people. Studies show that children who are physically fit have better body images than children who are “couch potatoes/gamers.” Studies also indicate that poor body image is a factor that can lead to depression and other mental health concerns. Encourage your child to get some form of physical exercise daily.
