Did you know that “akamai” means smart or clever in Hawaiian? The children in classes 1-5, 1-6, 1-7, and 1-8 were very akamai this school year. These classes participated with the Accelerated Reading Program during the school year. Every child reached their goal of earning at least 10 points in the program! A Luau celebration was conducted on a recent sunny day in honor of this accomplishment. The children learned that reading or “heluhelu” can be rewarding and fun! The classes participated in many games and activities while listening to the tropical music playing in the background. Some of the activities included: doing the limbo, fishing, Hawaiian musical chairs, beach ball volleyball, Frisbee toss, face painting, and spinning for prizes. A barbecue style lunch was provided by the MEC PTA and parent volunteers. Much “le’ale’a” or fun was had by all!
